Title: Fourth IUPAC Workshop on Safety in Chemical Production
Coordinator(s): A.
N. Wright
Completion Date: 2001 - project completed
Objective/Description:
Three Workshops have been sponsored in the developed countries to
help in the transmission of modern safety practices to especially less-developed
countries:
The 1st workshop was held in Basel, Switzerland in September 1990.
Topics included safety assessment, risk reduction and safety education
in the chemical industry. Case studies, including visits to chemical
plants of IUPAC Company Associates CIBA-GEIGY, Hoffman-La Roche and
Sandoz, were a unique feature of the workshop. [Chem. Int. 13(2),
50-60 (1991)]
Proceedings
were published and edited by J. Whiston.
The 2nd workshop was held in Yokohama, Japan in June 1993. The program
covered safety management, education and training, evaluation of hazards,
and engineering, and included cases studies involving visits to local
inductries. [Chem. Int. 16(2), 41-46 (1994)]
The 3rd and most recent workshop was organized in San
Francisco, USA in April 1997, joint with the ACS.

Progress:
1998 plans to hold a 4th workshop in Eastern Europe have been unsuccessful.
Plans have begun to hold the workshop in Africa as part of the 8th International
Chemistry Conference in Africa (ICCA) to take place in Senegal from
30 July to 4th August 2001, under the auspices of the African
Association of Pure and Applied Chemistry (AAPAC). For more information,
see conference webpage <http://www.cica.ucad.sn/cica1/>,
