1999, brief summary
Summary of Minutes of Commission Meeting at the IUPAC
General Assembly, Berlin, Germany, 8-9 August 1999
The Chairman outlined the mission of IUPAC, the future
abolishment of the Commissions and the new project-based structure
that would be put in place following the General Assembly of 2001.
Attention was also drawn to intercommissional and interdivisional
initiatives regarding coordination of environmental and advanced materials
chemistry projects, which are highly relevant for Commission I.6.
The status of ongoing projects was presented and discussed.
In the area of Nomenclature and Methods the projects "Nomenclature
of structural and compositional characteristics of ordered microporous
and mesoporous materials" (McCusker) and "Pillared clays and pillared
layers"(Schoonheydt) and are close to the finish, they also relate
to the field of Advanced Materials. A good start has been made
with the project "Measurement and Interpretation of Electrokinetic
Phenomena" (Gonzalez-Caballero).
In the field of Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development,
the Commission aims to present an interaction platform for the applied
and the fundamental scientists. The projects "Environmental Protection:
Surface, Colloid and Catalytic aspects" (Ralston) and "Colloid Chemical
and Catalytic Processes for the control and Protection of Environmental
Pollution" (Koopal) have resulted in a series of successful conferences.
Proceedings have appeared in Colloids and Surfaces A and in Catalysis
Today.
Joint meetings to discuss common projects, projects
of mutual interest and future projects were held with Commissions
I.3 (Electrochemistry), Commission I.7 (Biophysical Chemistry), Commission
III.3 (Photochemistry) and VI.1 (Fundamental Environmental Chemistry).
New activities were discussed (partly in the joint meetings
with other Commissions). In the field of Nomenclature and Methods
two project proposals were adopted: "Recommendations
for the use of Atomic Force Microscopy in the Direct Measurements
of Colloidal Forces" (Ralston). and "Glossary
of terms in photocatalysis and radiation catalysis"(Parmon). Parmon
(I.6) and Bolton (III.3) will investigate the possibility of merging
the last proposal with the existing III.3 project "Glossary of terms
in Photocatalysis". The possibilities to make the important "Manual
of Symbols and Terminology for Physicochemical Quantities and Units:
Appendix II: Definitions, terminology and symbols in colloid and surface
chemistry - part 1: Colloid and surface chemistry", by Everett, D.H.
(Pure Appl.
Chem. 31,
pp. 577-638, 1972) available through the IUPAC internet site will
be investigated.
Succession in the field of Environmental Protection takes place
in a joint proposal of I.3 and I.6 on "Electrochemistry
and interfacial chemistry in environmental clean-up and green chemical
processes" (Brett, Rusling, Ardizzone). This proposal, initiated
by Commission I.3, has already attracted co-sponsorship from the International
Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).
The area of Advanced Materials is covered with a proposal on
"Methods for
the Characterization of Inorganic Membranes" (Ma). A preparative
workshop will be organized in conjunction with the Inorganic Membranes
conference in Montpellier (2000). Schoonheydt will investigate how
a previously suggested proposal "Nomenclature and Recommendations
for the Characterization of Powders for Advanced Materials Manufacture"
can be more clearly defined.
Prof. L.K. Koopal was reelected as Chairman and Prof.
I. Dekany was reelected as Secretary. Profs. F. Gonzalez-Caballero,
T. Kunitake, E.Y. Ma, V. Parmon, J.B. Rosenholm and R.A. Schoonheydt
agreed to serve as Titular Members, and Profs. S. Ardizzone, A. Dabrowski,
J. Gregory, Y. Iwasawa, P.E. Laibinis and H. Rehage have agreed to
serve as Associate Members through 2001.
