ST06 Obtaining drinking water from seawater

Aim: To show a practical example of the application of distillation

Illustration ST 06 shows a desalination plant on a ship. The seawater is pumped up (A) and is brought into contact with heated cooling water from the ship’s engine (M) in a heat exchanger (B). Steam is formed (C). In an upper heat exchanger (D) that is cooled by cold seawater (E) the steam is condensed and introduced into the drinking water circuit (F). The residue returns to the sea via a separate pipe (H).
The installation as a whole is protected by an excess-pressure release-valve (G).
