CG08 The energy-rich trio

Aim: To illustrate the basic equilibria of redox – co-enzymes NAD+ and FAD and the synthesis of ATP.

The energy produced by the oxidation of glucose is accumulated in reduced co-enzymes and ATP.

The equilibria are characterised by the following facts:

Both oxidants have a negative E°’ :
the reduced forms are therefore good reducing agents and are only formed when energy is added.

The synthesis of ATP demands energy. This can be used whenever ATP is reconverted to ADP.
