The documents which make up this book were first produced and published by
the IUPAC Commission on Spectrochemical and Other Optical Procedures for Analysis
(V.4). The Commission was established in its present form in 1959, and began
a series of nomenclature, symbols, and units documents in 1973. The publication
of the first thirteen parts completed a set of nomenclature documents dealing
with standard (non-laser based) spectrochemical analysis.
A cumulative index to these parts was published [Pure Appl. Chem.
67, 1761-1779 (1995)], but the Commission believed that it would be very useful
to workers in the field of spectrochemical analysis to have the information
contained in these documents available together in a more convenient format.
To this end was this book compiled. The documents and tables were reformatted
for consistency and agreement with the latest parts and the figures were redrawn
for a consistent appearance.
These revisions have been mainly carried out by myself, with substantial
input from Allan Ure, the previous secretary of the Commission. Also very
much appreciated was the input from Mr. P.D. Gujral, Scientific Publications
Secretary at the IUPAC Secretariat.
