Title: Green Chemistry in Africa

Objective:
The project is aimed at increasing the awareness and attracting the interest of university students in African universities towards the Green/Sustainable Chemistry activities, by highlighting their general roles and simultaneously presenting already on-going activities in Africa.

Description:
The objective of the project is the preparation of a Green Chemistry book specifically designed for university students, with particular attention for students in African universities. The book plans to highlight the relevance of Green/Sustainable Chemistry in general, and to underline its potential relevance for developing countries.

Pietro Tundo and Liliana Mammino will be the co-editors of the book. External referees may be contacted, according to needs of the various chapters. Chapters will be contributed by different authors, most of them based in African universities. Such an option is aimed at highlighting the already on-going research activities and presenting them to students in an easily understandable way. This is expected:

to attract and enhance the attention towards Green/Sustainable Chemistry activities in general
to encourage further work from already practising researchers
to encourage students to consider this area for their professional future
to underline, in a matter-of-fact way, the significance of Green/Sustainable Chemistry activities within and for the African context.

The inclusion of a section on Green Chemistry education has the additional objective of linking research activities to the preparation of future specialists, by generating channels for a fast and effective dissemination of information (both the information stimulating research activities and the information resulting from them).

The project may be a pilot initiative for future green- chemistry-activities in Africa by IUPAC and related associations (scientific collaborations, networking, etc.).

Progress:
The book co-edited by P. Tundo and L. Mammino has been published by INCA in July 2002 (ISBN 88-88214-07-0).

The book has been launched at Agenda 21 of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, August 26-September 4, 2002.

The book will be further distributed to universities in Africa and to other higher learning institutions.
