Objective:
The terms quantum yield and quantum efficiency have been used
in heterogeneous photocatalysis (a very important process in applied
photochemistry) to infer the efficiency of a photon in carrying
out a given process. There is, however, no common accord as to
how to express this efficiency. In addition, the symbol phi has
been borrowed from photochemistry in the homogeneous phase but
with a different meaning, which has led to much confusion and
taken away the ability to use phi to compare results from different
sources. This project will address the question of how to assess
process efficiencies in heterogeneous photocatalysis, and in particular
the use of turnover numbers or frequencies.
