Title: Basic Definitions of Terms
Relating to Liquid Crystals
Baron and V.P.
Completion Date: 2001 - project
Liquid crystalline polymers and low molar mass liquid crystals are
becoming increasingly important technologically for application
as high performance plastics and in electronic devices. They are
also the subject of widespread academic study. Communications with
IUPAP and the International Union of Crystallography have determined
that no document exists to provide standardized definitions for
the basic terms in use to describe these materials. IDCNS has asked
Commission IV.1 to begin work to develop such a document for both
polymeric and low molar mass liquid crystalline substances.
document has been prepared by M. Barón, G. Luckhurst and R.F.T.
Stepto, and distributed for review. The public comment period will
end 31 Dec. 1999.
IUPAC Recommendations 2001 published in
73(5), pp. 845-895, 2001.
Terms from the above document has been selected to form a readily
usable guide for the reader interested in the structural description
of polymer liquid crystals.
