* Photochemistry
The context of increasing diversity in topics and specializations in a mature science such as photochemistry is reflected in this issue of PAC. The contributors include some of the plenary and invited lectures of the XXth IUPAC symposium held 17-22 July 2004, in Granada, Spain.
Conference Editor: H. Garcia

* Bio-Based Polymers
There is an ever-increasing demand for manufacturing plastics out of sustainable resources, because raw materials derived from fossil fuels are rather limited. Bio-based polymers can make excellent candidates for such materials, and they can contribute to the well-being of humankind by preserving the earth from nondegraded plastics waste. In this regard, it was timely and meaningful that the 8th World Conference on Biodegradable Polymers and Plastics (BDPP8, Seoul, June 2004)) was held to discuss current issues and the most recent advances in biodegradable and bio-based polymers and plastics. This volume of MS contains selected papers on six different topics, namely, microbial poly(hydroxy alkanoate)s, poly(lactic acid)s, biodegradable polyesters and polyurethanes, hydrogels and biomedical applications, blends and processing, and microbial degradation.
Conference Editors: S. S. Im, Y. H. Kim, J. S. Yoon, and I.-J. Chin

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2006 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers. The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.
Deadline: February 1, 2006 - for entrants that receive their Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2005.

* IUPAC Kinetic Data web site - erratum
An error in the summary table for the HO + CO reaction has been reported. The original expression in the summary table 1.44x10-13 ( 1 + [N2]/4x10-19 ) is incorrect. The correct expression should be 1.44x10-13 ( 1 + [N2]/4x10+19). The data sheet for the reaction is correct.

* Chemically Related Activities in China
The American Chemical Society Office of International Activities periodically prepares reports about the chemical enterprise in selected countries around the world. The purpose of these reports is to help scientists, institutions, and industry understand the landscape in particular countries. A new report on China was recently posted on chemistry.org/international.
