Prof. George Horvai

Education and Career: Prof. Horvai received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees
in chemistry and chemical engineering from the Technical University
of Budapest, where he studied with Profs. E. Pungor and K. Toth. He
also holds an M.S. in applied mathematics from R. Eotvos University,
Budapest. During his pre-doctoral studies, he worked in the laboratories
of K. Schwabe (Meinsberg, Germany), P. Kivalo (Finland), and W. Simon
(Zürich, Switzerland).
Since 1973, Prof. Horvai has been on the faculty of the Technical University
of Budapest, where he currently serves as vice rector for scientific
and international affairs and head of the Division of Chemical Information
Technology. He holds the rank of full professor.
Research Activities: Prof. Horvai has research interests in
physical chemistry, computer modeling and applications of ion-selective
electrodes, electrochemical detection in HPLC and FIA, automation in
the wet/ pharmaceutical analytical laboratory, and environmental analysis.
He is the author or co-author of more than 60 refereed papers, and
he holds six Hungarian patents and one U.S. and European patent. His
research collaborations and visits have included R. G. Bates (University
of Florida, USA), R. P. Buck (University of North Carolina, USA), T.
A. Nieman (University of Illinois, USA), F. A. M. Leermakers (Wageningen
University, Netherlands), and six European research laboratories in
the EU IVth Framework Program.
Awards: Prof. Horvai has won the "Academy Prize" of the Hungarian
Academy of Sciences and the "Outstanding Inventor" prize of the Hungarian
Minister for Industry.
IUPAC Activities: Prof. Horvai currently serves as Titular Member
and Secretary of the Commission on Fundamental Environmental Chemistry
(VI.1).
