The
IUPAC Committee on Chemistry Education assigns the organizer of
the International Conference on Chemical Education which is held
every two years provides an international forum for the presentation
of the latest results and future trends as well as for discussion
of the key problems in Chemistry Education. 18th International Conference
on Chemical Education on the theme "Chemistry Education
For The Modern World" organized by Turkish Chemical Society
was held in Istanbul Hilton Hotel, Turkey, 3-8 August 2004. In the
line of the theme of the conference, the main objectives of the
meeting were to enable the participants; to be aware of both current
and future trends in chemistry education, have an opportunity to
share, discuss and contribute in producing the scientific knowledge,
realize the new strategies which might be used in teaching and learning
chemistry, have a knowledge of new research areas both in Chemistry
and Chemistry Education and have an opportunity to explore the benefits
of the modern technologies used, approaches adopted and decisions
made, the results of these on environment and living organisms,
their other drawbacks and potential solutions. The conference was
sponsored by the following international organizations; IUPAC, UNESCO,
OPCW and by the following national organizations; Ministry of National
Education, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, The Scientific and Technical
Research Council of Turkey. The conference attracted approximately
425 eminent scientists and research scholars (228 International,
197 national) from 60 countries. The Scientific program included
9 plenary lectures, 10 keynote lectures and 180 oral presentations,
145 posters and 10 workshops covering a wide range of chemical education
issues. The presentations at parallel scientific sessions covered
the following areas; Assessment and Evaluation in Chemistry, Chemistry
and Chemistry Curriculum, Chemistry Education for Development, Chemistry
Education via Internet, Chemistry and Society, Chemistry Teacher
Education, Designing and Evaluating Teaching Strategies, Green Chemistry
and Environment-friendly Chemistry Experiments, Micro Scale Chemistry,
Modern Technologies used for Chemistry Education, Public Understanding
of Chemistry, Teaching and Learning Chemistry in Secondary Schools,
Teaching and Learning Chemistry at Tertiary Level, Theoretical and
Methodological Basis of Research in Chemistry Education. Additionally,
Science Education at Elementary Level and Polymer Education were
considered as a sub-sections of the conference.
The
conference made it possible for all participants, in particular
the young chemists and chemistry teachers who found a world forum
to present and discuss their results, meet scientists from other
countries, exchange experiences, and socialize with scientists from
all fields of chemistry education.
This issue of Chemical Education International
contains most of the invited lectures presented at 18th ICCE. On
behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to thank all participants
for their lively contributions to the success of the conference,
the sponsors for their financial support and the authors of these
invited papers for timely delivery of manuscripts and acceptance
of my editorial comments.
We hope 18th ICCE will bring out a great impact on the latest developments
in scientific and educational research in chemistry and will produce
progress in each. The next conference in this series will be held
12-17
August 2006 in Seoul, Korea, on the theme of "Chemistry
and Chemical Education for Humanity" <www.19icce.org>.
