Title: Critical evaluation of stability constants of metal complexes of complexones for biomedical and environmental applications

Objective:
Critical review of stability constants concerning the complexation of all cations by complexones in aqueous solutions with an emphasis on physiological conditions (35-36 C, 0.15 M NaCl)

Description:
Complexones are synthetic aminoacids Containing more than one carboxy group. They are widely used in a broad variety of medical, industrial and environmental applications. Two representatives (NTA, EDTA) have already been examined by IUPAC (Prof. G.Anderegg). There is strong need for a critical review of stability constants and thermodynamic functions of their closest analogues, especially macrocyclic ones. Currently, even data compilations are missing, and divergent data have not yet been reconciled. In view of the very large number of references, critical evaluations have to be restricted to 7 compounds with density ranging from 3 to 10. We have selected the most studied common chelators: IDA, MIDA, DTPA, TTHA, DOTA, NOTA and TETA.

Progress:
(Nov 2004) The first draft has been reviewed by the Division and is now being revised for consideration by the ICTNS.
