Analytical Chemistry Division (V)

COMMISSION ON SPECTROCHEMICAL AND OTHER OPTICAL PROCEDURES FOR ANALYSIS (V.4)

Number: 540/27/98

Title: Critical assessment of spectrochemical procedures for surface/interface analysis II Molecular analysis

Coordinator(s): K. Volka

Completion Date: 2000

Objective:
Spectrochemical analysis of surfaces and interfaces has gained recently a tremendously increasing interest due to many techniques being available. The ability to analyze molecules at surfaces and interfaces as well as to determine their orientation within layers, covers a huge demand for such techniques in modern spectrochemical analysis of materials in the area of mono layers, self-assembly layers, sensitive receptor layers for sensing, and for the examination of dichroism and anisotropy (e.g. liquid crystals). The project intends to cover various methods such as fluorescence, second harmonic generation, evanescent techniques in general, attenuated total reflectance, DRIFT, SEIRS, Raman, SERS, and photoacoustic techniques. An overview on operating principles and available instrumentation will be given. Standards for performance criteria will be defined.
