Title: Kinetic Description of Chemical Reactions under Non-Classical Conditions - Evaluation of Current Status (revised title)

Objective:
A position paper is being prepared on the theme outlined above. It deals with the current status of the kinetic description of chemical reactions under non-classical conditions as a new and largely unexplored field of interest in chemistry. The term "non-classical" refers to experimental conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, plasma phase, supercritical phase, fluorous phase, ionic solvent, ultrasound and microwave radiation. Such non-classical conditions offer a host of new and challenging applications within the chemical, industrial and engineering fraternities. However, a lack of systematic information on well developed kinetic models and compiled kinetic data may lead to the inability to simulate such processes, to extrapolate existing data obtained under classical conditions, and to understand the mechanisms of chemical reactions occurring under such conditions.

Progress:
A task group of experts in the field has been appointed to prepare a summary on the current status of the kinetic description of chemical reactions occurring under the non-classical condition assigned to each of them. The contributions will be edited and integrated into a final position paper of which all contributors are co-authors. The selected topics include:

  • Reactions induced by ultrasound
  • Reactions under high pressure
  • Reactions induced by microwaves
  • Reactions in supercritical fluids
  • Reactions in ionic solvents
  • Reactions in fluorous phase
  • Reactions in plasma phase

The completion date of the position paper is set for 31 December 2001. In the event of revealing unmet models/data needs in the respective areas which merit involvement of IUPAC, these may be proposed for future full-scale projects.
