COMMISSION ON SOIL AND WATER CHEMISTRY (VI.3)
Number: 630/20/95
Title: Measurement of chlorine residuals in water
Coordinator(s): M.
Gardner and O.A.
Shpigun
Completion Date: 1997- abandoned
Objective:
Chlorine is used in many countries and its use as a water disinfectant
has proved to be of enormous public health benefit. Its chemistry in natural
waters is very complex as a result of chemical reactions with natural organics,
ammonia, etc. and most measurement techniques respond to many different chemical
species which complicates the interpretation of results. The project reviewed
current techniques for measuring chlorine in natural waters, taking into consideration
the complex chemistry and make recommendations for further research.
