Project

Physical Chemistry Division (I)

COMMISSION ON BIOPHYSICAL CHEMISTRY (I.7)

Number: 170/7/93

Title: A Nomenclature for Lipid Mesophases

Coordinator(s): M. Caffrey

Completion Date: 1999 - project abandoned

Objective:
This project has the aim of devising a nomenclature for lipid mesophases and polymorphs. It is needed because the system devised some two decades ago is inadequate because of the enormous growth in the number of new phases that have recently been identified. The purpose of the new scheme is to simplify the nomenclature itself. It will be based on a logical, structural hierarchy and will have a built-in flexibility such that new phases and modifications can be readily accomodated. It will dispense with the need for cumbersome symbols, subscripts, superscripts, and characters that are used in the old nomenclature.

Progress:
Project abandoned
A first draft document was presented to the members of Commission I.7 at the GA in Geneva. Based on the discussion that followed a first version of the final document will be drafted by the end of 1997. It will be sent to Commission members and experts in the field.
