Physical Chemistry Division (I)

COMMISSION ON THERMODYNAMICS
SUBCOMMITTEE ON TRANSPORT PROPERTIES

Number: 122/3/85

Title: Standards of Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity

Coordinator(s): W.A. Wakeham

Remarks: Commission I.4

Completion Date: 2001 - project terminated

Objective:
The establishment of internationally approved standard reference values for the transport properties of fluids which may be employed as calibration data in national or international or industrial laboratories. The need for the impartiality and objectivity of an international group of experts is self-evident.

Progress:
Good progress continues to be made. A conflict has arisen over a new standard reference value for the viscosity of water which is the ultimate standard for all viscometry. The PTB in Germany have issued a recommendation without any consultation with any other body. This will require delicate negotiations since the recommendation is not the same as that planned by the subcommittee.

Work is proceeding towards the publication of an IUPAC recommendation and negotiations are in progress to seek agreement with ISO in this matter. Other publications are in preparation.

Last Update: 27 November 1999

Project terminated 31 dec 2001
