Title Magnetic Field Effects in Chemical Systems
Adviser Professor PJ Hore
Thesis Committee Professor Ulrich Steiner, Universität
Konstanz, Chemistry Dept; Dr Nicholas Green, University of Oxford,
Magnetic fields can alter the rate, yield or product distribution of
chemical reactions. This thesis is concerned with the relatively
uninvestigated effects of weak magnetic fields ~1 mT found in
nature. This thesis is motivated by a desire to lay firm physico chemical
foundations for discussion of the biological effects of magnetic fields.
It presents new theoretical tools and applies them to interpret experimental
