* Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis
The 12th IUPAC International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS-12) was held in Ontario, Canada, from 6-10 July 2003. This conference reflected the current state-of-the-art in organometallic chemistry as it is used in organic synthesis. The themes of these lectures included asymmetric synthesis using organometallic reagents, design of new catalysts for organic synthesis, new C-C and C-heteroatom bond-forming reactions, structural and mechanistic aspects of organometallic chemistry, and organometallics in materials research. A perusal of the list of plenary, invited, and short-talk lectures from scientists around the world highlights the strength, diversity, and novelty with which this science is being practiced. A selection of contributions appears in the IUPAC journal.

* Bioinorganic Chemistry
The 2nd Santa María Workshop took place on 7-10 July 2003 in Santa María del Mar, Havana, Cuba and was devoted to bioinorganic chemistry. The workshop focused on five main areas: metal interaction with DNA and nucleotides, metalloporphyrins, copper compounds, metal nitrosyls, and the influence of genomics on bioinorganic chemistry. A selection of contributions appears in the IUPAC journal.

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - Special PAC topic articles featuring the 2003 Winners
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists seeks to encourage participation of young scientists throughout the world in an annual competition that requires candidates to submit short essays based upon the topic of their Ph.D. studies. Starting in 2002, prizewinners have been invited to submit manuscripts on aspects of their research topics for consideration as short, critical review articles to be published in PAC. Following peer review, the first collection appeared in PAC 74, 2021-2081 (2002), and encouraged the view that it offers sufficient readership appeal to become a regular special topic feature of the journal. The works of the 2003 prizewinners appear in the February 2004 issue of PAC, including the following critical reviews:
~ Photodegradation and Photosensitization in Pharmaceutical Products:
Assessing Drug Phototoxicity, by G. Cosa
~ Recent Developments in the Coordination Chemistry of Stable Free Radicals, by M.T. Lemaire

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2005 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers. The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay. Deadline: February 1, 2005 - for entrants that receive their Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2004.
<http://www.iupac.org/news/prize.html>

* Affiliate Members
AMP documents, including certificate and card for 2004-2005, will be mailed with the July-August issue of Chemistry International, and not as in previous years, with the May-June issue.

* Chemistry's contributions to humanity
The feasibility study initiated last year by Ed Przybylowicz continues to make progress. At this time the task group has identified and compiled a list of books, pamphlets and websites, that contain information on the theme of chemical contributions to society. The listing is by no means complete and the task group is soliciting help from all to augment this list or critique it from the standpoint of what is included. See list: <http://www.iupac.org/projects/2003/2003-022-1-020.html>

* Fundamental Constants
In December 2003, new best estimates of the fundamental constants were released. These are compiled and published with the authority of a CODATA committee that exists for this purpose, but in practice they are produced (on this occasion) by Barry Taylor and Peter Mohr at the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).
