Do not forget
to back-up your computer!
It was just another day yesterday until my computer crashed ... and
than nothing, just a void. Luckily I did back-up my system last Friday;
I know, a back up of yesterday would have been better, but who is that
perfect ;->
So I did start another processor and restore emails and data from a
few days back. In a way, it made me feel a few days younger, but seriously,
what a nightmare! After an hour or so, I was able to re-email my colleagues
and friends, asking them to back me up on what happened earlier, and
send me back lost files. Quickly I felt that I was back on track, but
really I also felt that I have aged a few days just in a few hours.
I have learned my lesson: back-up regularly, and always be thankful
to your friends and colleagues for the help they provide.

* Endocrine Active
Substances
A report from the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment
(SCOPE) and International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)
project on endocrine active substances, a major project looking at these
potentially harmful substances from a world-wide perspective, will be
published in a double issue of the IUPAC Journal, Pure and Applied
Chemistry, 75 (11/12), 2003.
An Executive Summary edited by J. Miyamoto and J. Burger is readily
available.

* Boron Chemistry
Every 3 years, the International Conference on Boron Chemistry provides
a forum for the presentation of the latest results and future trends
as well as for discussion of the key problems in various fields of boron
chemistry. The main goal of the conference is to analyze the state of
the art in boron chemistry, to encourage the newcomers to the field,
and to give the experts fresh motivation for future developments. For
a long time, boron compounds have played an important role in fundamental
chemistry owing to the fortunate combination of their unique structure
and their wide range of practical applications. The IMEBORON XI was
held 28 July - 2 August 2002 in Moscow, and the invited lectures have
been published in the IUPAC journal.

* Mission and
Challenges of Polymer Science and Technology
The IUPAC Polymer Conference on the Mission and Challenge of Polymer
Science and Technology (IUPAC PC2002) was held as the first strategic
conference of IUPAC 's Macromolecular Division (MMD), in order to figure
out the present stage of polymer science and technology and clarify
their mission and challenges in the future. The scientific program consisted
of 4 plenary lectures, 6 scientific sessions (including 42 invited lectures,
33 oral, and 577 poster presentations), and a panel discussion concluding
the conference and discussing the role and activities of IUPAC 's Macromolecular
Division among the world polymer community. For a selection of invited

The 4th Florida Heterocyclic Conference was held at the University of
Florida in Gainesville, Florida, USA from 10-12 March 2003. About 170
out-of-town participants were treated to a plethora of fascinating chemistry
presented by 12 plenary lecturers. A selection of contributions appears

for Young Chemists - 2004 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.
Next Deadline: February 1, 2004 - for entrants that receive their Ph.D.
(or equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2003.

Prize in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Call for Nominations - deadline December 12, 2003
The Thieme-IUPAC Prize is presented every two years on the occasion
of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry - International
Conference on Organic Synthesis (IUPAC-ICOS).
The prize is awarded to a scientist under 40 years of age whose research
has had a major impact in synthetic organic chemistry.
