* Special topic articles featuring the 2002 Winners of the IUPAC Prize
for Young Chemists

Invited to prepare a short peer-reviewed review article, the four 2002
winners have all agreed to contribute to this special publication:
- J.J.L.M. Cornelissen, "Hierarchical transfer of stereochemical
information in synthetic macromolecules"
- J. Kim, "Assemblies of conjugated polymers: Intermolecular and
intramolecular effects on the photophysical properties of conjugated
polymers"
- S.K. Pushpan, "Aromatic core-modified expanded porphyrinoids with
meso-aryl substitutents"
- S. Lorkowski, "ABCG subfamily of human ATP-binding cassette proteins,
and P. Cullen"
These articles are published in Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 74, No. 11, pp.
2021-2081 (2002); preface by Dr. Alan Hayes, IUPAC Past President and
Chairman of the Prize Committee. Publication was coordinated by Prof.
James Bull, PAC scientific editor.

* Solid State Chemistry
The majority of the plenary lectures presented at the 5th Conference on
Solid State Chemistry (SSC 2002), (Bratislava, Slovakia, 7-12 July 2002)
are published in this issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
The topics cover almost all branches of modern solid-state chemistry,
which attract the interest of scientists and producers of new materials
and technologies. Topics include advanced synthesis and characterization
techniques of materials; structure and electron structure of solids;
chemistry of glasses; novel inorganic materials; layered compounds,
clathrates, and intercalates; and deposited films and surface chemistry.
Conference Chairman: Pavol Sajgalík
Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 74, No. 11, p. pp. 2083-2168 (2002)

* Impact of scientific developments on the Chemical Weapons Convention
IUPAC was asked to provide advice on scientific and technological
advances that might influence future operation of the CWC. A workshop
was held in Bergen, Norway in July 2002 to examine the impact of
scientific developments on the CWC. A number of eminent scientists
described advances in various areas of the chemical sciences, and the 79
participants from 34 countries discussed the implications for the
implementation of the CWC.
The papers compiled for this publication are based on most of the
lectures presented at the workshop and provide an unusual insight into a
number of diverse modern technologies that are finding a wide variety of
applications, including potential applications to the chemical weapons
area. In addition, a report giving IUPAC 's findings and conclusions,
was provided to OPCW and is reproduced as a Technical Report.

* Organic Synthesis
This publication resulting from the 14th International Conference on
Organic Synthesis (ICOS-14) (Christchurch, New Zealand, 14-18 July 2002)
covers a broad subject matter including the synthesis of bioactive
molecules, combinatorial chemistry, stereoselective synthesis, green
chemistry, metal-mediated synthesis, and automation in synthesis.

The Proceedings presented at the 41st Microsymposium of the Prague
Meetings on Macromolecules( July 16-19, 2001 Prague, Czech Republic)
comprised 8 main and 20 special lectures by prestigious experts, and 74
poster contributions. Particular attention was paid to the following
topics: (a) conductive polymer membranes, (b) polymer electrolyte
membranes for fuel cells, (c) gas separation membranes, (d) membrane
hybrid systems, and (e) polymer membranes for separation of biological
mixtures.
