I08 The hazard symbols.

Aim: To familiarise the students with the standard hazard-symbols which indicate the possible dangers of specific products.

Most of these symbols are provided with a warning text in 4 languages. This is missing on the sign for radioactivity, because no internationally agreed text was available at the time of going to print. For each symbol a suitable example is given:

irritant Xi sodium carbonate
corrosive C sodium hydroxide
very toxic T+ potassium cyanide
harmful Xn trichloromethane
toxic T methanol
dangerous for the environment N pentachlorophenol

oxidising O potassium chlorate
explosive E trinitrophenol
highly inflammable F calcium carbide
extremely inflammable F+ hydrogen
radioactive radon
